Understanding English Grammar
Explore a short selection adapted from our existing grammar module, then try a five-question knowledge check. This preview does not save progress or count toward certification.
Part A: Grammar terminology
A noun names a person, place, thing, or idea. A verb expresses an action or state. An adjective describes a noun, while an adverb can modify a verb or adjective. Pronouns, prepositions, conjunctions, and articles are other essential word classes.
Part B: Sentence structure
English commonly uses a subject–verb–object pattern. A simple sentence contains an independent clause. Compound sentences connect independent clauses, while complex sentences include a dependent clause.
Simple: She runs.
Compound: She runs and he walks.
Complex: She runs because she enjoys it.
Part C: Verb tenses
Tenses help explain when actions happen and how they relate to time. Compare I eat rice every day (present simple), I am eating rice now (present continuous), and I ate rice yesterday (past simple).
